With no running goals for 2021, I have decided to just go out for runs. Pace and distance are just secondary to just getting out there and enjoying the process. Part of this means letting go of the need to finish my runs at a specific distance. I’m going to get out there and enjoy the cold fresh air as it hits my face. As much as I don’t love wearing layers of clothing to run, I do enjoy a good run in the winter. It makes me feel like a badass runner. This past weekend I was supposed to be running The Chicago Marathon. But that marathon, like many others, the in person event was cancelled and it became a virtual marathon. I decided not to run it virtually as it’s hard enough for me to run a marathon with thousands of people cheering me on, I know that running it independently would be hard.

While I have no virtual long races to train for, I’ve got a few 5k races that I’ll be doing virtually. So, for the time being, I’m keeping my runs on the shorter side. I know my body appreciates the lower mileage and I know I appreciate getting more sleep on the weekends since I’m not doing 20 mile long runs on weekends!
How have you made adjustments to your training for virtual races?
Keep on running!
